A. PLANNING WBT

Take a quick look at the Phases of WBT Development form which lists the key phases and steps needed to plan and develop WBT. This form was developed and piloted for our WBT workshop. While we believe that the major phases and many of the subordinate steps are generically applicable to developing any WBT, we also expect that you may need to adapt and/or reorder steps to fit your unique WBT development needs. While phases are roughly sequential, many tasks may be underway simultaneously, especially in later phases.

Initial Planning Phase
The initial planning phase closely matches the process used in face-to-face workshops. Special considerations for early planning were covered in Session 2.

The key steps in the initial planning phase are as follows:

  • Assign the core team members
  • Determine organizational rationale, capacity, environment, and goals, including:
    • Determine WBT budget
    • Determine availability and cost of resource (eg., hardware, software, consultants)
  • Determine target audiences
    • Determine potential markets
    • Specify prerequisites for participants (readiness for WBT; difficulty level of content; computer knowledge and technical capacity)
    • Publicize training and recruit participants
  • Conduct learner assessments (needs, preferences, experience, strengths and resources)
  • Analyze learner assessments
  • Finalize team members and consultants and their roles and responsibilities.
